How does one look for a new job anyway?

Death of a Dixiecrat

A friend of mine met =http://story.news.yahoo.com/n...Strom Thurmond once a few years ago. All the senator talked about was calisthenics and how to stay healthy. I guess one could say he was expert at that.

Best cat toy ever

=http://www.drsfostersmith.com...Da Bird -- This thing is amazing - not a typical feather toy. It actually seems to mimic the flight pattern of a vulnerable, wounded bird. It causes my Orson Welles-shaped cat to get all 4 paws off the ground. My more svelte cat does moves straight out of the Matrix to get near it. I have to hide it from them when I'm not home, lest they cover it with teeth marks and kitty drool.

Can this possibly be true?

The following quote comes from the Ha'aretz newspaper. Granted, it's a 2nd hand report and it was translated from Hebrew (I'm pretty sure). But anyway, a conversation between George W. and Palestinian PM Mahmoud Abbas reportedly resulted in the following exchage. Believe it if you wish:

"Abbas said that at Aqaba, Bush promised to speak with Sharon about the siege on Arafat. He said nobody can speak to or pressure Sharon except the Americans.

According to Abbas, immediately thereafter Bush said: 'God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.'"

God said what? And what's this "focus" going to be exactly?

As a wise friend of mine said, Nixon was a megalomaniac, but I don't think he ever thought God spoke to him.

for the sake of completeness

Al Sharpton's campaign song: Sam Cooke's "A Change is gonna come." A little too downtempo for my tastes, but a nice sentiment.

And George W.? Why, it's "Hail to the Chief," of course.

I'm really not kidding.

The Bob Graham Charisma Tour 2004

Why, =http://www.salon.com/news/wir...Bob Graham, why? Isn't one crappy campaign song enough? Do you have to release a whole CD about YOU?

"... tracks on the CD include "Bob Graham, The ONLY Candidate," to the music of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer;" "My Beautiful Adele," a ballad dedicated to Graham's wife; "G.W. Bushonomics, Supply Side, Economic Blues;" and "My Black and White Friend," a ditty about the replacement cow valve used in Graham's recent double-bypass heart surgery. "

His dead black and white friend is more like it.

Presidential campaign ditties, continued

Joe Lieberman's song: "We are family." When I heard this, I imagined Joe dancing around with Sister Sledge and nearly fell off the couch.

Sadly, Dennis Kucinich has no song as of yet.

Presidential campaign ditties

Back during the 1996 presidential campaign, I became interested in campaign theme songs, thanks to Bob Dole. He picked "I'm a Soul Man" and had cleverly changed "Soul" to "Dole" (and had left out the raunchy verse* - he should have brought it back for the Viagra commercials).

Now we have a whole slew of Democratic hopefuls, many of whom have already picked out their own campaign songs. Let's review them.

Dick Gephardt and Bob Graham have apparently picked the same song: Tina Turner's "The Best." I can already tell this is going to be a problem.

Howard Dean chose Elvis' "A little less conversation." This is a fun song overall, and I get what Dean is going for with it, but I think when Elvis asked for "a little more action," he was just trying to get laid.

John Edwards picked John Mellencamp's "Small town." I want to vomit.

John Kerry apparently couldn't decide and has been using two songs: Tom Petty's "I won't back down" and Bruce Springsteen's "No surrender."

And if any of you know what Lieberman is using, I'm dying to find out.

So, what's the deal with trying to adapt a popular song for a campaign? It's just embarrassing sometimes. Ronald Reagan totally misused "Born in the USA," as did the 1st George Bush with "This land is your land."** Honestly folks, you should look at the lyrics first. Similarly, when Gore used "You ain't seen nothin' yet," the line about the devil woman who took his heart away had mysteriously disappeared.

-----------

*verse:
"I was brought up on a side street
I learned how to love before I could eat
I was educated at Woodstock
When I start loving, oh I can't stop"

**verse:
In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.
